Shed Buying Guide

Everything you need to know to choose, prepare and install the right garden building.

1. Choosing the correct shed size

Start by listing what you plan to store and how much room you will need to move around inside. A 6x4 shed suits basic garden tool storage, while 8x6 and 8x8 sheds comfortably hold a mower, bike and equipment. Workshops and heavy-duty buildings are typically 10x8 and above. Always allow at least 50cm of clearance around the shed for installation and maintenance, and check the path access to your garden before ordering.

2. Overlap vs Tongue & Groove

Overlap cladding uses overlapping boards nailed to a frame — it is the most affordable construction and ideal for basic storage. Tongue & Groove boards interlock, giving a stronger, more weathertight and better-looking building that resists draughts and warping. Choose Tongue & Groove for premium sheds, workshops and anything you want to last.

3. Pressure Treated vs Dip Treated

Dip-treated sheds are dipped in preservative for a base level of protection and usually need a top-up treatment each year. Pressure-treated timber is forced deep into the wood under high pressure, giving long-lasting protection against rot and decay — often backed by a longer guarantee and requiring far less ongoing maintenance.

4. Timber vs Metal vs Plastic

Timber sheds offer a classic look and are easy to customise. Metal sheds are strong, fire-resistant and very low maintenance — ideal for security. Plastic (resin) sheds are completely rot-proof, lightweight and need no treatment, making them a popular low-maintenance choice. Each material suits different priorities, so match it to how the shed will be used.

5. Preparing a suitable base

A shed must sit on a firm, level base — a concrete pad, paving slabs, timber bearers or a purpose-made plastic grid. An uneven or soft base will twist the frame, stop doors fitting and shorten the building’s life. Prepare the base before delivery and ensure it is slightly larger than the shed’s footprint.

6. Planning permission

Most domestic garden sheds fall under permitted development and do not need planning permission, provided they sit behind the building line, cover less than 50% of the garden and are not used for business or sleeping. Rules differ for listed buildings, conservation areas and very large sheds — if in doubt, check with your local authority before ordering.

7. Installation considerations

Check that there is clear, wide access from the delivery point to the final position — narrow side passages, steps and tight corners can prevent installation. Many sheds arrive as a flat pack for self-assembly, while larger or premium buildings may be available with professional installation. Decide whether you will build it yourself or arrange help before delivery day.
