Question 1

Which roofing system is right for my project?

Accepted Answer

The best choice depends on the roof size, shape, substrate and expected use. One-piece EPDM sheets are usually the simplest option for straightforward domestic roofs. A lightweight membrane suits sheds and outbuildings, reinforced roll systems work well on detailed or commercial roofs, and liquid-applied waterproofing is useful on irregular surfaces. Stonegate Supplies can help you compare the options before ordering.

Question 2

How long can an EPDM roof last?

Accepted Answer

A correctly specified and installed EPDM roof can provide several decades of service. Many sheet-membrane systems are designed around a service-life expectation of roughly 50 years, while individual liquid systems may have a different stated lifespan. Actual performance depends on preparation, installation, drainage, exposure and maintenance, so always check the product-specific technical information.

Question 3

Can I install an EPDM roof myself?

Accepted Answer

Many small, straightforward roofs can be completed by a competent DIY installer using a cold-applied, one-piece membrane. Larger sheets can be heavy, and roofs with outlets, rooflights, upstands or several seams require more care. Heat-welded systems need specialist equipment and training. If you are unsure, ask Stonegate Supplies for guidance or use a professional installer.

Question 4

What roof deck should I use beneath an EPDM membrane?

Accepted Answer

A clean, dry and structurally sound plywood or OSB3 deck is commonly used beneath one-piece EPDM membranes. Some systems can also be installed over compatible insulation boards, concrete, felt or bituminous surfaces. The permitted substrate and preparation method vary by system, so follow the relevant technical specification and adhesive instructions.

Question 5

Can EPDM be installed over an existing felt roof?

Accepted Answer

It depends on the system and the condition of the existing covering. Standard one-piece membranes are generally best installed on a new, sound timber deck, while certain fleece-backed, reinforced or liquid-applied systems are intended for suitable refurbishment overlays. The old roof must be dry, stable and compatible; trapped moisture or loose material should be dealt with first.

Question 6

What EPDM membrane thickness should I choose?

Accepted Answer

Thickness should match the roof type and duty. Lightweight 1.0mm membranes are commonly used on sheds and outbuildings. A 1.2mm membrane suits many domestic flat roofs, while 1.5mm and reinforced fleece-backed options provide additional robustness for more demanding applications. Thickness is only one factor, so consider the substrate, detailing and expected foot traffic as well.

Question 7

How are separate EPDM sheets or rolls joined?

Accepted Answer

Joining methods vary by roofing system. Large one-piece membranes use compatible seam or cover tape only where an additional join is unavoidable. Reinforced roll membranes may use factory-applied seam tape or hot-air-welded joints. Liquid-applied systems form a continuous coating without sheet seams. Use only the primer, tape and joining method specified for the selected system.

Question 8

Does EPDM installation require heat or a naked flame?

Accepted Answer

Most one-piece EPDM membranes and liquid-applied systems are installed cold, so they do not require a naked flame. Some reinforced roll systems use a controlled hot-air welding tool to form their seams, but this is different from torch-on roofing. Check the system details before starting and use trained installers wherever specialist heat-welding equipment is required.

Question 9

Can I walk on an EPDM roof?

Accepted Answer

Occasional access for inspection and maintenance is normally possible when the roof build-up is designed to support it. EPDM membranes are not automatically suitable as a regular walkway, balcony or terrace surface. Use protection pads or a specified walkway system where repeated access is expected, and avoid sharp objects or concentrated loads that could damage the covering.

Question 10

How do I measure and order materials for an EPDM roof?

Accepted Answer

Measure the roof at its widest and longest points, then include enough membrane for upstands, edges and detailing. Allow for the correct quantity of deck adhesive, contact adhesive, primer, seam products, trims, outlets and accessories. Stonegate Supplies’ EPDM and roof-kit calculators can help estimate materials, but complex roofs should be checked against a detailed plan before ordering.
